Murchison Falls

Murchison Falls image

Murchison Falls National Park is the largest park in Uganda. It has beautiful scenery from the dense rainforest on the hilly ranges in the south-west to the undulating savannah of the north.

The Nile River splits the park, and forcing itself through a 7 metre gap, creates the incredible 40 metre Murchison Falls, one of the most dramatic sights in Uganda. The park’s forest is home to many primate species, including chimpanzees, and the open river areas attract plains game including antelopes, buffalos, Rothschild giraffes and elephants. A highlight of any safari here is a boat-trip on the Nile, where you’ll see hippos in their hundreds and crocodiles basking in the sunshine.

Did you know?

  • You can see the rare shoebill stork here.
  • The Budongo forest is adjacent to Murchison where you can visit the chimpanzees cousins.
  • Take the boat along the Nile to the base of the Murchison Falls then walk to the top for some amazing views. You can drive to the top of the falls too.
  • The river Nile meanders its way from Lake Victoria and is then pushed through the 9m wide gorge of the Murchison Falls.
  • You can take a boat trip to the river delta as it empties into Lake Albert where you see local fisherman who skilfully throw weighted nets into the delta to catch their fish. There are huge papyrus beds filled with birds and aquatic life.
  • There are a few hotels in the park but most are on the river outside of the park so you have to take a ferry across the Nile for game drives.
