Southern Namibia

Southern Namibia image

Harsh, beautiful and full of surprises, Namibia’s south has a lot to offer.

Namibia’s south is very harsh but very beautiful and is where visitors to come to see Namibia’s eerie ghost towns, abandoned by the diamond miners in the 1950s, now partially buried under the sand. From the former colonial town of Luderitz, you can also go on a boat trip to Halifax Island to see its jackass penguins. A particular highlight of this region is the Fish River Canyon, which is very dramatic and is the world's largest canyon after the Grand Canyon.

Did you know?

  • If you’re fit and up for the challenge, you can hike through the Fish River Canyon, or simply admire its scale from a viewpoint at nearby Kokerboom.
  • The canyon meanders for 160km through the barren landscape of southern Namibia. It reaches a depth of 550m and a width of 27km.
  • Visit the stunning Kokerboom Forest and the hot springs at Ai-Ais.
  • You can go kayaking on the Orange River.
  • On the road to Luderitz you will pass herds of wild desert horses.
  • You can visit the ghost town of Kolmanskop once a rich diamond mining settlement and now being swallowed back into the desert.
  • The surreal fishing and seaside town of Luderitz has an isolated feel to it with German colonial buildings which cling to the rocks overlooking the bay.
