Liwonde National Park

Liwonde National Park image

Liwonde National Park has always been Malawi’s prime game-viewing area. It has had issues in the past with poaching and human-wildlife conflict, but under the management of African Parks (a non-profit conservation organisation) things have changed significantly for the better.

In only 5 years Liwonde has one of the best ranger forces and training grounds in the area and use advanced technology to protect and monitor the wildlife. Over 300 elephants were relocated to Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve helping with human conflict, by putting space between the elephants and local villages around the park. They have also introduced cheetah, lion and 17 black rhino from South Africa. Liwonde’s wildlife populations are on the rise as are the numbers of visitors to the park to witness this revival.

Cut by the Shire River and with mountains to the south and Lake Malombe, a tributary lake to Lake Malawi, to the north, it is a diverse and very pretty park and with numbers rising it is putting Malawi back on the map for safari goers.

It also has wonderful birdlife with species including Livingstone's flycatcher, the rare Pel's fishing owl and Boehm's bee-eater.
