Kenya Coast

Kenya Coast image

Kenya’s beautiful coastline provides the perfect end to any safari as you swap the drama and dust of the bush for powder white sand, blue azure and relaxation.

The Kenya coast is divided into the north and south coasts with Mombasa in between. There are beautiful white sandy beaches, coral coves and a fringing reef which keeps out the breakers of the Indian Ocean, offering safe swimming and watersports in the calmer waters. The reef is excellent for diving and snorkelling all along the coast. There are quite a number of big hotels but also some smaller more unique cottages and lodges which are set in quieter bays away from the hustle and bustle of the main beach resorts.

Did you know?

  • Watamu is an important turtle nesting beach and forms part of a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve.
  • There are lots of private houses to rent where you will have a cook/housekeeper and you can visit the markets to buy your tropical fruits and veg and fresh seafood from the local fishermen.
  • Book early for New Year on the coast as it’s very popular with locals, expats and visitors.
  • The best time at the coast is from October to April but it’s humid at this time.
  • May to September the Kuzi (monsoon) wind blows and the sea can be quite choppy and some beaches are affected by seaweed.
  • Deep sea fishing is world renowned and the best time is October to April. If want to catch Marlin and sailfish the best time is from December to mid-March.
  • There is quite a lot of sharp coral on the beaches so take some shoes for swimming.
  • There is a big tide all along the coast, so when the tide is out it’s paddling only.
  • I’m afraid there are no romantic sunsets over the sea but lovely moonrises and very early sunrises.
