Okavango Delta & Moremi

Okavango Delta & Moremi image

The Okavango Delta is one of the world’s unique natural wonders: 15,000 square kms of lush wetland sourced by southern Africa’s third largest river, the Okavango, and is the largest inland delta in the world.

Famous for its mokoro (dug-out canoe) safaris and amazing birdlife, the Okavango Delta has a flourishing eco-system and is one of Africa’s best safari destinations. The game-rich Moremi National Park protects the main area of the delta, and around it are a number of private concessions with just a couple of small, private safari camps which offer the opportunity to go on fabulous night drives, off-road safaris and on breathtaking walking safaris taking in all this beautiful wildlife haven has to offer.

Did you know?

  • There are ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ areas in the delta, offering slightly different experiences.
  • The northern section of the delta is permanently flooded, and activities are water-based, while the southern section of the park is only seasonally flooded.
  • In these drier areas you go out on foot or in 4WD vehicles, and have more chance of seeing big game including the cats, elephants, buffaloes and zebra. In flood (May-September), these activities are supplemented by water activities.
  • The pan handle of the delta is a prime tiger fishing spot.
  • The Tsodilo hills are a UNESCO world heritage site with ancient rock art over the 3 mountains. Sacred to the local people this is one of the world’s oldest historical sites and well worth a visit.
  • Most river deltas lead into the seas but the Okavango empties into open land, flooding the savanna and creating a unique inland delta.
  • The delta swells almost three times in size between March and August.
  • The water in the delta travels 1200km from its source in the Southern Angolan highlands.
