Kalahari Desert

Kalahari Desert image

Stretching across six countries, the Kalahari Desert is nowhere more beautiful and classic than in its heartland in central Botswana.

It is a true wilderness, the last refuge of the San Bushmen, and the ultimate in ‘remote’ safari destinations. Contrary to what you might imagine, although sand dunes and pans do occur, the flat desert tableau is surprisingly well vegetated and in summer boasts large concentrations of game and the largest animal migration outside East Africa. One of the main attractions is its wilderness atmosphere, wide-open spaces and intense solitude and silence – an experience which every soul deserves at least once in a lifetime! This atmosphere combined with the San Bushmen makes the whole area feel that it has been lost in time.

Did you know?

  • The remote Kalahari region of Botswana is visited by only a handful of visitors each year.
  • There are no lodges within the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, but Deception Valley Lodge is a luxury lodge just on the boundary with great bushmen guides who will keep you entertained with stories about their ancestors, history and future.
  • The wet season is a great time to visit the Kalahari as the water brings it to life.
  • The Kalahari is the second largest desert in Africa after the Sahara.
  • You can find leopard, cheetah and the famous black-maned lions here.
  • The Kalahari is home to desert specialities such as meerkats, bat-eared foxes, cape fox and brown hyena.
  • In the winter the temperature drops well below zero due to the relatively high altitude and clear air.
