Uganda : Lake Mburo NP
Situated virtually half way between Kampala and the game viewing areas of western Uganda, Lake Mburo National Park is the ideal stopping off point to break this long journey by road. The beautiful and tranquil Lake Mburo is set amongst rolling hills and open grassy valleys, and the park also has four smaller lakes. There is an excellent variety of water and acacia savannah bird species (357 bird species) including crested crane, the rare shoebill stork, marabou stork and bronze-tailed starling, bee eaters and even more exotic birds like Blue Naped Coucal, Bare-faced Go-Away Bird, Nubian Woodpecker and swamp flycatcher. The park is also home to a wide variety of mammal species including topi, roan antelope, leopard, jackals and hyena, and the surrounding papyrus swamps hide the beautiful Sitatunga, a very special antelope with narrow, elongated hooves which allow them to move freely on marshy land. As well as cruises on the lake where you will see crocodiles, hippo, pelicans and other aquatic birdlife, you can enjoy guided walks and game drives in the park.
Mihingo Lodge is a luxury lodge in a beautiful setting. It has ten thatched tents on stilts, some set in woodland, others on rocky outcrops, and some with lake views. The rooms are well spaced and secluded and all have their own private bathrooms. There is an infinity pool below the dining room where you get fantastic views of wildlife gathering at the waterhole. Activities include boat trips on Lake Mburo, day and night game drives, nature walks and horseback safaris.
