Tanzania : Lake Victoria
Rubondo Island might just be the most unique destination in Africa for those seeking an exceptional adventure experience in the wilderness. Rubondo is the largest island in the park with only one camp. Elephants roam wild, colourful birds and butterflies flit through the boughs of pristine indigenous forest, and the waters teem with the iconic Nile Perch. Activities include game drives and nature walks where the guides will introduce you to the forest and its smaller inhabitants, you can explore the shoreline and hidden coves by canoe, fish for Nile Perch and tilapia or simply relax by the pool and have a massage. There are wild chimpanzees on the island who are in the process of being habituated so very difficult to see.
Rubondo Island Camp is an idyllic resort half way between a lodge and a beach retreat with lovely views of the lake and the forest, shaded by towering fig trees and teaming with wildlife. With just eight rooms facing the lake, designed to be minimal and natural looking with large double beds in the centre, en-suite bathrooms with large walk in showers. For a romantic treat why not stay in the treehouse a large outdoor platform with a bathroom where you can sleep under the stars and get closer than ever to nature. There is plenty of game on Rubondo Island which can be difficult to see however slowly the animals will get more habituated but there is so much more to enjoy in this wilderness playground with a real feeling of getting back to nature.
